"I could put three stripes on a piece of shit, and the next day she'd sell it as Gucci."
said David, the owner of a vintage clothing store that served rockstars on South Street in the 70s and 80s, pointing to me.
I blushed, because it was the supreme compliment from a master of sales.
Anyone who is a fan of the band The B52s **has most likely seen a signature piece or two from David's boutique. They were his best customers. In the 90s, I worked for his daughter as she was building her brand in the old Retro space after he retired. I learned a lot from both of them, and I am grateful.
I've always had a knack for sales. This makes sense, as sales skills are little more than the cycle of mirror, fawn, mask, repeat: AKA autistic survival. I've been doing it my whole life.
In today's unpredictable political climate, cultivating spaces where talented individuals can create and earn a living independently is paramount. That's why I am excited to announce the upcoming expansion of our flea market this summer!
Our mission is straightforward: we will support makers who struggle in conventional employment settings. By establishing an inclusive environment on a vibrant Etsy-like marketplace, we empower these creative individuals to connect with customers who appreciate their elite skills and high quality.
Understanding the Need
The current political and economic instability has a notable impact on many aspects of life, especially for those who depend on social security benefits to survive. Ongoing discussions around the future of these programs only emphasize the need for independence.
For individuals with disabilities or without autism, the ability to generate additional income as soon as possible is critical. I have set an intention to reduce my reliance on the income I get from social services as quickly as possible, and suggest you do the same.
What to Expect This Summer
This summer, our flea market will feature new products and vendors as well as exclusive vendor only workshops. We are committed to offering not just a marketplace, but also a learning environment that stewards the growth of those chosen to be partners.
Our expanded offerings will include:
Workshops and Skill Development: We will host workshops focused on various skills, from sales techniques to entrepreneurship. Experts in the community will lead these sessions, aimed at sharing knowledge, building skills, and offering peer support.
Vendor Space for Local Makers: We are currently seeking participants from the Philadelphia area to join as vendors. If you are a maker identifying as disabled and neurodivergent, we want to hear from you. Emaill nicole@the-autistic-burnout-project.com with the subject line "Flea Market" to move forward with your application. This is an excellent opportunity to showcase your work and connect with potential customers. You will get access to local same-day delivery service and low cost shared booth space at in-person events throughout the 2025-2026 vending season.
Collaboration with Local Artists: I am also seeking partnerships with local artists and artisans willing to provide mentorship to emerging makers. Collaborative projects will display the diverse skills in our community, reinforcing bonds among participants.
Call for Participants
If you or someone you know is a maker in the Philadelphia area and would benefit from a supportive community experience, I invite you to reach out via email to get started today. I look forward to expanding the platform nationwide next year.
Each vendor will receive personalized support tailored to their specific needs and circumstances, ensuring that we work collaboratively towards our mutual success. This support will encompass a variety of resources and assistance designed to enhance the vendor's experience and effectiveness in our partnership.
Our dedicated team will be available to provide guidance and answer any questions that may arise, centering on a strong line of communication. This includes regular check-ins to discuss progress, address challenges, and explore opportunities for improvement. We understand that each vendor operates within a unique context, and as such, we will take the time to understand their individual goals, capabilities, and market conditions.
Networking can be tricky when you are disabled, so we will facilitate communication between vendors, stewarding them through shared marketing and promotional activities and leveraging cross-promotions that enhance their visibility and reach within their target markets.
By investing in our vendors through comprehensive support, we aim to create a thriving cooperative marketplace free from exploitation. We are rolling out vendors slowly and mindfully, prioritizing those with the greatest need.
The Vision Forward
I firmly believe in the ability of all of us to rise to meet challenges and seize opportunities with the right support. I want to nurture the skills of disabled neurodivergent makers. This is my small contribution to creating a world that centers creativity and autonomy, one merchant at a time.
Could that merchant be you?
Looking Ahead
As we gear up for this exciting expansion, the importance of community support cannot be overstated. This flea market is a collaborative effort driven by hope, tenacity, and our shared mission.
I encourage everyone—whether you are a maker or a fan of handmade goods—to get involved, share this message, and help us establish a lively space for creativity and connection. Your support can transform dreams into reality for those striving for financial autonomy and self-reliance that doesn't ask you to compromise your well-being.
Let’s make this summer a time of empowerment, creativity, and success for disabled makers.
Together, we can navigate the uncertainties of today’s world, emerging from this crisis stronger.
